That symbol is known as OM or AUM, in Hindu religion. It is the first word of the chants or mantras for all the devine Gods in Hindu mythology. It is a sacred symbol for Hindus. Meditation is done with the pronunciation of this word and it is basicaly the spine of all hindu mythology.
Om as I percieve is the symbol of the Universe.
